The “Kimono-Suitable City, Kyoto” Executive Committee is currently holding the “KYOTO HAORI Competition” with the theme of “New HAORI from Kyoto” in order to promote the kimono production area. The members of the committee are Kyoto Prefecture, etc.

The entry period is until January 31, 2023、and the submission deadline is February 22, 2023.

Haori, which is worn over a kimono, has long been used as a formal dress and as a fashionable item that protects against the cold and stains. One of the features is that the length and pattern change with each season, and the basic style is to wear it with the collar folded back and fastened with a haori string.

Haori is gaining attention overseas as a stylish fashion item. In order to spread the attention of haori from Kyoto to the world, The Committee is trying to rebrand it as “HAORI”, which is a new way to send out Kyoto, and they are soliciting ideas for new clothing that can be worn in everyday life.

Mr. Shuichiro Ono, an inbound tourism consultant who has successfully promoted inns and hotels all over Japan for foreign tourists for 15 years, tells us what makes Kijitei Hoeiso stands out as below.

Open-air bath along the mountain stream

Delicious cuisine (you can enjoy pheasant meat hot pot)

Friendly and helpful service

Its independent cottage, the old folk house(more than 400 years old!) which has been relocated from Okuhida 50 years ago, is used be a traditional Japanese restaurant and popular with its authentic cuisine. Kijitei Hoeisyo is named after its specialty. Pheasant is “Kiji” in Japanese. Famous Japanese writer, Mushanokouji Saneatsu (1885-1976) was the godfather.

Pursuing sustainability

The owner Mr.Hara Kenichiro told us about their effort to pursuing sustainability.

“Now we use the wooden chip boiler to heat hot springs, but originally, we have used heavy oil. However, by looking at the mountains of Hakone from our villa, I have found that we have such a precious resources of this mountain, the woods, and the idea to make a good use of those resources have come up to me. This became the starting point for the introduction of the wooden chip boiler. Using the trees of Hakone also helps to keep the local mountains in a healthy state.

In order to realize this, I had the help of the network of the Global Environment Division of the Small Business Entrepreneurs Association that I belong to. It was a really hard way to realize. I could not do this by myself.”

Mr. Hara is also trying to make the most of the tourist attractions of Hakone. From a big point of view, he is thinking about “utilizing” the nature of Hakone with comrade.

“Hakone originally has lots of valuable resources. Woods, of course, many attractive cultures and natures unique to Japan that you would like to see more.”

If you are looking for a traditional Japanese living experience in rural area, you would love to try Miyama FUTON&Breakfast, one of the Japanese inns attracting attention nowadays.

Miyama FUTON&Breakfast is an inn where you can stay in an old private house with a thatched roof, produced by thatched craftsman.

Mr. Shuichiro Ono, an inbound tourism consultant who has successfully promoted inns and hotels all over Japan for foreign tourists for 15 years, tells us what makes Miyama FUTON&Breakfast stands out as below.

You can stay in thatched old folk house

You can stand in the original Japaese landscape

It is located near by Kyoto city (90 minutes by car）

150 years old vintage house

There are 4 cottages Each has its own characteristics, and you can choose according to your travel companions, number of people, and how to enjoy your trip.

The main cottage “Hanabusa” is 150 years old and registered as a site of cultural heritage.

The owner, Mr. Haruo Nishio, himself is the thatched craftsman who rehearsed thatched roof training not only in Japan but also in the UK. According to Mr. Nishio, thatched roofs have a history of more than 5,000 years. Our ancestors have started to build roofs with grass around when they have started living in nature.

Here is the short movie about making Miyama FUTON&Breakfast. You will see how he has been facing with passion to thatched roofs.

It is said that almost all the guests regrets not have stayed more than two nights. Miyama Futon&Breakfast may be a place where the vitality of a primitive life in nature can be restored in the guests.

Kouyaji temple is an old historic temple, which is said to be opened by Koubou Daishi, the Buddhism great teacher 1200 years ago. It is famous for its rhododendron and is also known as ‘Shakunage-dera’ (The Temple of Rhododendron). Its beautiful Japanese garden has been restored based on ancient documents.

Rhododendron flowers are in full bloom in the beginning of April usually. The garden is colored by rhododendron white and pink, crimson of the temple tower, and green moss.

There is a corridor about 50 meters in length,
and visitors can enjoy the beautiful rhododendron without getting wet on rainy
days
